its all about resilience

A new newsletter has recently sprung up aiming to provide medical students along with our senior colleagues with advice on how to maintain ‘resilience’ during times of stress, or in their words “real resilience resources”. It is early days yet but this joint initiative from General Practice Registrars Australia (GPRA) and the General Practice Students Network (GPSN) seems to be a good one. It might just be one of the many blogs out there, like this one worth subscribing too :-) Check it out here.

Interim Report of the National Health & Hospitals Reform Commision

Last year the Prime Minister and Minister for Health & Ageing created the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission (NHHRC) charged with the task of considering the future of the Australian health system and the long-term reforms required to meet current and future challenges. More info is available on the NHHRC website.

The interim report, initially published in December last year, is now available online.

While the report is pretty weighty, the section that is especially relevant to medical students is that concerned with medical education & training, titled  “Working for us: a sustainable health workforce for the future“.

MSCV is currently considering its position on this report and would love to incorporate your thoughts into our submission. Please let us know what you think by emailing us or commenting on this post.

Panel discussion on proposed National Registration & Accreditation Scheme

As you may have heard there has recently been talk of nationalising medical registration in this country, a process which so far has been carried out on a state level. While this may at the surface seem to offer many benefits to future doctors, critics argue it may erode the quality of medical training by allowing a currently independent process to be taken over by the government.

A panel discussion is being held on Monday 2nd March at 8pm in Kew,  Melbourne which will no doubt provide some clinical commentary on this issue, as it is being hosted by a local branch of the Victorian Liberal Party.

Find out more details here in the recent Newsletter from The Australian Association of Surgeons: newsletter-february-2009
